The DNA of litigation with a global vision

Alexandre Giroux is not a conventional immigration lawyer. Even before beginning his studies at Université Laval, he had already started building an international perspective through an academic immersion at UNAM in Mexico — an experience that profoundly shaped his understanding of the Spanish-speaking world and Latin American cultural dynamics.

Later, during his time at Université Laval, Alexandre deepened his training in geopolitics and modern languages, earning his Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Modern Languages with outstanding grades. His international vision was further consolidated through a second strategic academic immersion at PUC-Rio in Brazil.

Throughout this journey, he developed exceptional proficiency in French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese — tools that today define his ability to operate in transnational markets and act as a strategic bridge between Canada and Latin America. His trajectory was not merely academic; it constituted a true cultural and linguistic immersion that allowed him to understand legal and institutional dynamics from their human and social roots.

Excellence at McGill and the rigour of the judicial system.

His path continued at McGill University, where he completed the transsystemic BCL/JD program, earning degrees in Civil Law and Common Law. During this period, his performance was exceptional, earning him the Harry Batshaw Prize for the highest average in Foundations of Canadian Law and the Class of Law 1964 Award for his distinguished prior record. Before leading his own firm, Alexandre honed his strategic acumen in the most demanding spheres of Quebec’s judicial system, serving as a judicial clerk at the Court of Québec (Youth Division) alongside Justices Robert Hamel and Pauline Reinhardt Laforce. Subsequently, he strengthened his litigation capacity as an articling student under the guidance of the renowned Richard C.C. Peck, K.C. in Vancouver, participating in high‑complexity legal research and drafting in criminal, constitutional, and administrative law.

The strategic transition to immigration and criminal law.

After practising as a litigator at recognized firms such as Narwal Litigation LLP and Riendeau Avocats Inc., Alexandre identified a critical gap in the market: the need for technical representation for foreign clients facing immigration consequences arising from criminal proceedings. His prior experience as a community supervisor for the Correctional Service of Canada and his work with Innocence McGill gave him a deeply human and technical perspective on the impact of criminal convictions on the lives of non‑citizens. This focus has led him to regularly participate as a speaker on the intersection between criminal and immigration law, addressing inadmissibility processes, criminal rehabilitation, and temporary resident permits (TRPs). His practice in this area has allowed him to develop a solid technical understanding of complex issues affecting individuals and businesses in the Canadian immigration context.

The business legacy: Giroux O’Connor Immigration Law.

In 2025, Alexandre decided to leverage his bilingualism and extensive experience to co‑found Giroux O’Connor Immigration Law. His vision was clear: to establish a practice that not only manages visas but also offers comprehensive representation before institutions such as IRCC, CBSA, and the IRB. Currently, he splits his time between Quebec and Bogotá, leading a bicultural team that facilitates access for the Latin American community to the complex Canadian legal framework. His firm today reflects a career dedicated to excellence, where the training received at Université Laval remains the cornerstone of his international impact.
